Mileage deduction 2026: CHF 0.75 per km – check your tax return

A small but effective change: from tax year 2026, a flat-rate deduction of CHF 0.75 per kilometre may be claimed for commuting and professional travel by private vehicle – up from the previous CHF 0.70. Anyone who regularly commutes to work or covers professional distances should ensure this figure is correctly entered in their tax return.
Who benefits – and by how much?
The higher rate applies to direct federal tax and has been adopted by most cantons. For a commuting distance of, say, 20 km each way over 220 working days per year, this amounts to around 8,800 kilometres – meaning CHF 6,600 rather than CHF 6,160 in deductible travel costs. The CHF 440 difference may seem modest, but it directly reduces taxable income. Anyone maintaining records for multiple vehicles, or self-employed persons preparing mileage logs for business trips, should update their figures now.
Review and correct now
Review your salary certificates, mileage logs, and accounting records to ensure the correct rate is applied. If you have already filed your tax return using CHF 0.70, a correction can be submitted as an objection in most cantons. For self-employed persons, the rate also applies to privately owned vehicles used for business.
If you have questions – for example, about separating private and business use, or about how this interacts with the private-use declaration for a company vehicle – we are happy to advise.
